Cultural Capital: Sari UK

(Top by Sari UK)

Sital Punja, a british social entrepreneur of Asian descent established SARI UK in 2002, two years after first visit to India. Her first exposure to extreme poverty left such an impact that made her come up with the idea for this social enterprise.

When somebody goes to India, it was a tradition to bring back old saris and distribute them to poor families. Sital did just that. Seeing that saris were not enough, she thought to develop these old saris into fashion accessories that could be sold and the profit can be of help to more charities in India. Her idea and her designs were a success, having influential women such as Cherie Blair wearing her creations. She also won the Asian Business “Community” Award  for her work.

Read more about her here and see her 2007 interview here.
