Working our Way to Courage

Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality.

                                                   – Aster and Richter Abend in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.

Going into business is not the easiest thing to do. It is as they say, not for the faint-hearted. But the benefits and rewards of business are sometimes too great to pass up — economic independence, self-realization or attainment of a dream.  And so, we just have to find the courage to do it. Here are some pointers to help us work our way towards courage and towards taking the step into the world of business.

1. Know why you are doing this and keep reminding yourself.

Be clear about your motivations and intentions. Think about it, is business the way to finding your self-worth, making a living for yourself or for your family, or for living a passion and having a life with meaning? Remind yourself  why it’s worth doing. And draw your courage from there.

2. Know what it is that you should fear (and be prepared for it)

Accept that it’s not going to be easy. Accept that it will take a lot of work. Knowing all these is not to prevent you from actually going into business but for equipping yourself to face the challenges ahead. Prepare yourself through information, acquiring the skills and knowledge you need, surrounding yourselves with the right and competent people. Courage comes from knowing that you are able to face and surmount what is ahead.

3. Envision Success

Know where you’re headed and keep your eye on it. Remember that you are putting in the effort not to fail but to SUCCEED. Cliche as it may sound but it’s true, there is no other way to go but up.

5. Have a Plan A and a Plan B, C, D… if necessary

Clarifying the steps and the actions needed on how to set up that business transforms the vision into  something real.  Breaking down the goal into small pieces also helps to see its feasibility. And since we all know that not everything always goes according to plan, it’s important that we have back-up plans. Knowing that we have options gives us the courage to move forward no matter how the road turns ahead of us.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
